Cancer Sucks

Hey all, it's been awhile...
Things have been pretty hectic here ~ we have all been sick, the hub is recovering from knee surgery, snow storms, the Holidays, etc.

Yesterday we got the devastating news that Hurley is out of remission and no longer responding to his chemo protocol.  Since he was diagnosed on May 1 last year, we were on round 2 of chemo.  He went into remission quickly after starting chemo in May but didn't stay in remission long after stopping so we started up again in the fall.  A few weeks ago his nodes were enlarged so we changed his drug protocol at the recommendation of the oncologist.  His nodes shrunk down but yesterday they were all noticeably larger again and our worst fear is here ~ he is no longer responding to standard chemotherapy.  There are 3 "rescue" protocol options and we have decided to try one called "MOPP" - it is a 4 week treatment of injectable chemo and at-home chemo pills, as well as prednisone.  Basically the onco is giving us an average of 2-3 months, depending on whether he responds to this new treatment and goes back into remission or not.  It is a bad sign when an animal comes out of remission while receiving treatment, which is where Hurl is at.  So far he is still feeling good though and acting like himself.  Although last night he was very thirsty and got sick a few times.  He was supposed to start this new treatment yesterday but due to the weather the drug is backordered and they are expecting it on Monday.

If this treatment makes him sick or have bad side effects we will stop treating him ~ under no circumstance will we make things worse for him or let him suffer.

He rode with me on the way home from Tufts and helped me pick up the kids' medicine at CVS...

He knows SAFETY FIRST, so he sat in the car seat, maxing out the weight capacity by A LOT...

I couldn't find him one night last week and he was snuggled up with Bentley in bed...

And Gracie says "doggie" and now "Hurley."  CLICK HERE to watch.

We love you Hurley boy...we promise to do whatever is best for you.
